Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Borno State, particularly areas like Ngala Local Government Area (LGA), has been heavily affected by the rise of extremist groups and insurgency, leading to severe social and economic consequences. Extremism, particularly in the form of terrorism, poses a major threat to community safety and social cohesion in Ngala. Social media, however, has emerged as a tool for both spreading extremist ideologies and countering them. Through social media platforms, organizations, religious leaders, and government agencies have launched campaigns to counter violent extremism, promote peace, and engage communities in dialogue. According to studies by Abdul and Umar (2024), social media can be an effective platform for countering radicalization by promoting messages of peace, tolerance, and unity. This study explores how social media can be utilized in Ngala to counter extremism, focusing on how online platforms help to raise awareness, challenge extremist narratives, and promote positive community engagement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Extremism in Ngala has created significant social divisions, leading to violence and insecurity in the region. While social media has been a platform for radicalizing individuals, it also offers opportunities to challenge extremist ideologies and promote counter-narratives. However, the role of social media in countering extremism in Ngala remains underexplored. This study seeks to investigate how social media is being used in the region to counter extremism, focusing on its effectiveness in promoting peace, tolerance, and community resilience.
